Can You Will Your Way to Fat Loss and a Flat Stomach?
February 28th, 2008 · Filed Under: Podcasts
Howdy all!
Willpower - it’s an interesting word, isn’t it?
The ability to control your actions.
Some of you believe in it, and some of you don’t.
Some of you think that to create long lasting, permanent weight loss, you need incredible amounts of willpower. Others scream phooey!
Me? I think you can will yourself to do something on a short term basis. But willpower is temporary. I had great success on The Every Other Day Diet, but I did not rely on willpower.
I mean, how many of you have ever started on a diet program full force? You’re excited. You know this time will be THE time that you lose your weight for good. And after about a week or so, it comes crashing down to an end.
What happened?
Did you not have enough willpower?
Maybe there are some things you could have done prior to starting the diet to make your results long lasting. Such as setting up your environment for success and finding your bigger reason for wanting to lose weight.
Scott Tousignant and I talk about willpower in this week’s episode of The Great Fat Loss Debate.
After you listen, I want to hear what your expereinces are with willpower. Has willpower worked for you? Do you even believe in willpower? What have you done to successfully lose weight and keep it off especially when you have certain foods that you can’t live without. Share your comments below.

Hello Fellows;
Interesting topic!!Willpower I believe can be used as an excuse to eat unhealthy and not feel guilty..we can use it to blame it on not having enough of it so we can go ahead and not have to give up what we already have our minds set up to do anyway!!I have had the tremendous opportunities to be in on some interesting discussions with people like Dr. Lendon Smith who treats cravings especially in women with what they are lacking in..if you crave a certain food then find out what is in that particular food that is lacking in your body..cravings can come from either a body that is malnourished or just not absorbing the nutrients or a body that is toxic..I eat chocolate but also take an enzyme to be able to digest it so I do not get the negative effcts from the sugar and I enjoy it very much..does it have to do with willpower?? No, from my point of view..I also learned that the real organic chocolate has magnesium in it and when a person craves it it is because the body is lacking in magnesium..anyway,just another point of view..thanks Helen

The reason people eat junk foods are;
a. Out of habit
b. For the taste
c. Because they are physically and/or
psychologicall addicted to it!
WILLPOWER (also known as discipline) has
nothing to do with it. That’s like saying a heroin addict should be able to
use willpower to quit (some people actually do believe this is possible!).
The ONLY way someone can get off junk
food is to deprive the body of it for
14 to 21 days (think of it as a junk
food detox). Unless a person has an
OVERWHELMING, ALL CONSUMING REASON AND
PURPOSE to quit, it won’t happen. You
could literally FORCE the person to eat
healthy, but that of course isn’t prac-
ticle. It doesn’t help that junk food is
so prevelent in our society, which is one of the reasons obesity is at an all
time high in this country. That’s it.

Helen,
You are right on the money. I’ve know a few women who couldn’t figure out why they were craving peanut butter so much.
Turns out, their nutrition plan contained nearly no fat as they were trying to lose weight by cutting it all out.
Raymond… great points. It certainly doesn’t help that we are surrounded by junk food like you say. But how come the 3-5% of us who successfully avoid it even though we are just as surrounded as everyone else?
Beliefs! Attitude! Strong enough reasons to avoid it.

People eat junk food b/c it’s readily available and it’s everywhere around them. Also some people don’t know how to cook, don’t want to cook, too tired after work or simply too lazy to cook.
Willpower would help in these cases
- but only if people would want to make a change!
Sometimes I’m too lazy (for example, after being sick for the 4th time this winter) to get to the gym 3/week and think that I’ll use weights at home…but guess what ? my workout at home won’t be as intense as if it were at the gym - and the results are showing - in my stomach area, where else :-)? I’m petite, so I have to watch what I eat and exercise…I know I can use my willpower to look great as I do in the summer (I am not that lazy that I will allow myself not to look great&hot in a swimsuit), but I usually gain 5 lbs in the winter - that keeps me warm and I am not as hungry all the time.
Cravings : I always eat what I crave b/c I believe my body knows best - 1 day it could be red peppers&tomatoes&onions&balsamic vinagrette salad, another day- chocolate, or canned tuna w/miracle whip on a pumpernickel bread, or blue corn tortilla chips w/taboule. I try to balance my diet, but I don’t “beat” myself up if I ate too much.
Nomar is great cat !
