Cereal and Six-Pack Abs12 Comments
Today I want you to take a close look at the ingredient list of your cereal box.
I’m looking at an old box of Kellogg’s Smart Start Healthy Heart Cinnamon Raisin cereal.
On the front it says contains ingredients that may help lower BOTH blood pressure and cholesterol.
A tempting reason to want to buy the cereal to say the least.
But upon further examination of the ingredients, here is what it contains…
Oat Bran, Sugar, Rice, Raisins, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Glycerin, Dextrose, Malt Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Cinnamon, Coconut and Palm Kernel Oil, Baking Soda, Ascorbic Acid, Niacinamide, Zinc Oxide, Wheat Starch, Calcium Pantothenate, Reduced Iron, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Thiamin Hydrochloride.
The last few ingredients are the vitamins and minerals.
But the point is that ingredient number 2 is sugar.
Ingredient number 5 is high fructose corn syrup.
And a few other ingredients I don’t know what they are, but they don’t sound good.
Sugar and high fructose corn syrup are exactly the type of ingredients you should be avoiding.
Meanwhile take a container of oats.
You know what the ingredients are?
Well actually there is only one – 100% natural whole grain rolled oats.
My point is you really need to watch what your eating – especially foods like cereals that make claims to be healthy but actually are probably ruining your efforts at getting a flat stomach and six-pack abs.
You want to eat as many single ingredient foods, like oatmeal and eggs, and less of these foods like cereal.
I know people that eat cereal for breakfast in the morning and for dinner at night.
If you’re doing that, you’re setting yourself way back.
I’ve only had cereal once since last August and that was when I was home at my parents house for Christmas.
Other than that, I don’t eat it anymore and I’ve gotten by stomach flatter and leaner than it’s ever been.

And get yourself on a good nutrition program like The Carb Rotation Diet.
I would love to get your feedback and your opinions on cereal.
Just leave a comment here.
Have an amazing day.
Scott

I counsel my nutrition clients all the time to read the ingredients! The “Smart Start” cereals in particular tick me off. Some of them have 11 different kinds of sugar in them. The AHA should be ashamed of themselves for selling out.
Good for you Scott for pointing it out to your readership!

Try shredded wheat–no sugar or salt added. I have it with skimmed milk. Not at the 6-pack level yet, more like 3.5-pack, but I’m making progress…

I’m still experimenting with how many grains I want to eat, but cereal has been off my list for years. I might add grape-nuts or shredded wheat as a “treat” sometimes, but neither have added sugar (although they are processed!). I’m concerned about how the mainstream bodies concerned with health push diets that aren’t helping anyone – and they are “authorities” so people listen. It’s awful.

Hi Scott…i couldn’t agree more about your cereal blog…it reminds me of an audio i heard once with Tom Venuto of Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle…where he said ‘if it’s man made, don’t eat it’ – and it’s been my mantra ever since! Like you say…single ingredient foods are best…the less tampered with by human hands, the better…Thanks! Amy

Scott my husband and I have come to this conclusion recently too. We both enjoy oatmeal and the grain is sweet enough on its own. No need for any kind of sweetener.

Hi Scott!
I agree with you 100%! I don’t normally buy cereal for my kids and I. But my husband likes it as an occassional treat since I don’t bake. We are having company stay for the summer so I bought them organic wheat square cereal. Even though it is organic, it is still loaded with sugars and malts.
I also visited a new friend who was vegan yesturday and in his house he had organic soy milks, organic cereals, organic jams, organic baked beans. All these organic products are loaded with sugar. Organic is not always healthy. I got very sick on this kind of organic vegan diet. Sugar and high grain consumption was the reason. Now I am healing by having to get rid of all sugars including fruits.

I agree with the comments about the cereals. I gringe when my family wants cereal and they always want me to get the worst ones but I don’t give in.
Myself I don’t eat cereal except for a few sprinkles on yogurt, of a cereal by Zone (Nutritious Living by Dr. Sears). All good ingredients, low sugar (5g) high protein (14g). Also I might use some Bare Naked low sugar granola . Other than that it’s oatmeal and lately I have been mixing in cooked quinoa, add some cinnamon, vanilla top with fruit ….yummm
I am very conscious of my sugar intake (probably almost too much!) Most of my sugar comes from fresh fruit.
I read labels all the time when shopping that’s why it takes me so long to do the shopping!!! I have pretty much eliminated anything with hydrogenated oils, high fructose, palm kernel oil and sugar other than in a natural form. I recently found Agave Nectar which i am trying to get my family to use instead of any sugar products.
Stay healthy everyone! Dianne

I agree with the ingrediants of most cereals, but I read them on Kashi cereals and it looks like they are all whole ingredients. If I’m wrong, someone let me know.

I heat some water with a few raisins and a dash of salt. Then I add rolled oats and cook until done. The raisins sweeten the cereal enough without adding any sugar.

Hi. I agree with all the info and comments. However, I do eat Safeway’s brand of cereal called “Eating Right” as a snack. Sugar is usually the 3rd or 4th ingredient, depending on the flavor you choose (corn syrup is usually a “middle” ingredient). Hopefully, eating cereal as a snack, instead of potato or tortilla chips, is better??? Let me know if I’m wrong…..
