Foods Revealed11 Comments
All right, thank you everyone who responded. We had 130 comments on the blog and a few more on Facebook. A lot of you said you would choose neither (even though I said you had to choose one of them).
So….drumroll please.
Food #1 was Smart Start cereal (they brand these as Heart Healthy and with Antioxidants.
Here is what is says on the Kellogg’s website:
You’re already making choices to build a stronger heart – little things that add up to positive changes. Kellogg’s® Smart Start® cereals offer lots of great-tasting ways to do something positive every day. Make the simple choice to start your mornings with Smart Start® cereal.

Here are the ingredients again…
Oat bran, rice, sugar, oat clusters (sugar, toasted oats [rolled oats, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, molasses, honey], wheat flakes, crisp rice [rice, sugar, malt, salt], corn syrup, polydextrose, honey, cinnamon, BHT for freshness, artificial vanillaflavor), high fructose corn syrup, malt flavoring, potassium chloride, salt, baking soda, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), niacinamide, zinc oxide, reduced iron, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitaminB6), riboflavin (vitamin B2), thiamin hydrochloride (vitamin B1), BHT(preservative), vitamin A palmitate, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D.
Food #2 was Fruit Loops

Now remember, not everyone gave me an answer but 49 of you (if I counted correctly) said you would choose food #2 – Fruit Loops – although all of you weren’t happy about me making you choose one.
Here are the ingredients of the Fruit Loops:
SUGAR; WHOLE GRAIN CORN FLOUR; WHEAT FLOUR; WHOLE GRAIN OAT FLOUR; OAT FIBER; SOLUBLE CORN FIBER; PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (ONE OR MORE OF: COCONUT, SOYBEAN AND/OR COTTONSEED OILS)†; SALT; SODIUM ASCORBATE AND ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C); NIACINAMIDE; REDUCED IRON; NATURAL ORANGE, LEMON, CHERRY, RASPBERRY, BLUEBERRY, LIME AND OTHER NATURAL FLAVORS; RED #40; BLUE #2; TURMERIC COLOR; YELLOW #6; ZINC OXIDE; ANNATTO COLOR; BLUE #1; PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6); RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2); THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1); VITAMIN A PALMITATE; BHT (PRESERVATIVE); FOLIC ACID; VITAMIN D; VITAMIN B12.
I’m not picking on these 2 cereals specifically I’m trying to make a point on how we are deceived into thinking that one of these is healthy (Smart Start) if we just read the front of the box. Heck I used to eat cereals like these all the time.
In fact, when I was a kid, my mom tried to feed us “healthy” cereals, such as Smart Start. Not that one specifically, because it wasn’t around then, but you get the idea. And we weren’t allowed to have the “sugary” cereals like Fruit Loops, unless we were visiting Grandma Colby and then it was a treat.
Unfortunately, she probably didn’t realize the crap that’s in a lot of these so called “healthy” cereals. And unfortunately, there are a lot of moms feeding their kids these types of “healthy” cereals – not realizing what’s in them. And a lot of adults are eating them too.
So please, read the ingredient label and, for the most part, stop eating cereal altogether.
I would love to hear your Comments. Please Post Your Comments Below.
Thanks,
Scott

Thought they were cereal. Great post Scott, hope it will open some eyes.
Keep up the good work!

I’d like to ask you a question. Are there any breads or cereals which are good for you? I’ve looked in vain for good bread in the bread aisle. I found one bread without sugar and it had refined wheat along with chemicals I couldn’t pronounce. Do you know any whole grain breads which live up to the title of “wholesome?”

Hi Michael.
If I eat bread or cereal, I tried to stick with the Ezekiel line, from Food For Life.

If I eat cereal at all it's a raw, soaked organic granola from http://www.higherpower.biz. I found out that I'm gluten intolerant. I used to love the Nature's Path Hemp cereal. Now I eat fruit for breakfast or sometimes I even eat leftovers.

I thought Food #2 was Fruit Loops. I thought Food # 1 might have been some sort of granola type bar.
Keep up the good work.

I wanted to know what cereal Scott would have chosen

Great post, I wish I could get my mother to accept this, she refuses to eat anything but junk. I just got back from Trader Joes. They carry Ezekiel Bread, But I prefer there own store brand line of sprouted grain breads. There are four or five varieties, all sprouted grains and no junk.

If I had to choose between the 2 junk foods, I'd go for Fruit Loops although it looks the more "Evil" of the 2. Heck, if I'm going to poison myself with food, I'd might as well have fun doing it!

In England Kellogg's have a cereal called Special K which is branded as a 'weight loss' cereal. They advertise a 'Special K Drop a jeans size weight loss challenge' where you eat Special k for breakfast, Special K for lunch and then a normal dinner. Given that Special K is 17% sugar, even if you did stick to the 100g serving that would still be a whopping 34g of sugar just in the cereal AND 116g of carbs!

If mothers really want good and healthy "cereal" breakfast for kids, they should go for something like oatmeal with milk and some honey for better taste. I am eating it right now, oatmeal+skim milk+honey+whey; healthy and tastes really great, no need for nasty cereals!
