So glad you addressed the difference between abdominal muscles working as stabilizers versus mobilizers !Working them in a “lengthened” position is totally functional as that is usually where we require strength & support on a daily basis … however, that does not exclude flexing the rectus abdominus/oblique muscles and training them for when we need to bend in a supported position.
I always look forward to reading your info.
Thanks

A lot people don’t realize their are using all day long, sitting, standing, and working out of course. I tell my clients that squat or better yet, overhead squat is the best “abs” exercise. To no surprise, they don’t believe me in the place until they try. In fact, most can’t do squat, not to mention overhead squat, properly in the beginning.

Scott-
You are so right on the money with this one. I make an extra effort to tell my clients during class that every exercise is challenging their core. And most people don’t realize that most if not all movements come from abdominal (core) stabilization. Hey but that’s what we are here for right. Good post.

Thanks! Great comments Marguerite, Carey and Ali. Great suggestion Carey on the overhead squats. I also like overhead lunges and overhead step ups. The abs get more engaged with the overhead movements.
