How To Lose Your First 10 Pounds – Part 127 Comments

Hey there – I’m going to write a brief set of articles with action steps that will help you lose your first 10 pounds. Or even if you’re in the middle of a program, this could help you break a plateau or get re-energized.
But let’s say you’re just starting out, and you want to lose some weight. Maybe it’s 10 pounds. Maybe it’s 50 or even 100. Losing 100 pounds would be a major accomplishment, but it’s a long ways away. And since it takes so long, you might not be that motivated to get started. So let’s just shoot for a manageable goal – losing that first 10 pounds. Fair enough?
My goal is to make this as fun and painless as possible.
Today you have 2 action steps:
Number 1. Go shopping. What the heck – I though you were going to help me lose 10 pounds, Colby? I am, I am. Hang with me for a minute. This is an important part of the process. Now, your shopping can be shopping at a store or on the internet. Here’s what you want to do. Find an outfit that you really, really want, and find it in the size that you want. Buy it in the size that you will be wearing when you lose all the weight you want to lose (not just the 10 pounds). So if you want to lose 50 pounds total, buy it in the size you’ll be wearing after your 50 pound weight loss.
Make sense?
When you get the outfit, I want you to hang it up somewhere you can see it every day, like on your bedroom door. If you can’t buy the outfit today, find a picture of it in a magazine or on the internet, cut it out and post it somewhere where you will see it everyday, like your refrigerator.
This is important as it will help you focus on the end result.
Number 2: Make one simple nutrition change this week. Make sure it is simple and easy to do. Drinking 2 sodas a day? Cut down to 1. Skipping breakfast every day? Pledge to eat breakfast 3 times per week. Add a glass of water or an extra piece of fruit to your diet. Something like these examples would be good.
Now what I want you to do is to leave a comment and tell me what outfit you’re going to buy and what nutrition change you’re making. Can’t wait to hear what you come up with!
Scott Colby

I have my entire summer wardrobe to choose from. I own and wear 4 skirts in my current size and refuse to buy more clothes. I'll hang up a pretty, slim, black skirt and red satin blouse, a combo I absolutely adore.
I will trade SlimFast for clean eating, and I will return to treadmill for fat burning, and dumbbells for weight training. Effective immediately.

In the last 6 months I lost both my mum (26th Dec) and Dad (14th Aug) to cancer. I gained 13 Kilo (comfort eating)! My goal to loose it just as quickly as I gained it and get my life back! I want to fit into absolutely any of my clothes! Replacing the junk with fruit and increasing my water.

Think I'll hit the end of summer bikini sales…that should be good motivation. Plus I haven't owned a swimsuit of any kind in years.
I have been taking the easy way out when it comes to breakfast…I am committing to eating a more balanced meal to start off my day…protein, fruit and complex carbs.

I'm 10 lbs from goal, and have a gorgeous black sleeveless dress with matching jacket that I bought when I was at my thinnest ever. I think this is a great idea. Since I'm using an outfit I already have, and am close enough to pull it part-way on, I can also try it on once a week to see my progress and strengthen my commitment.
I'm going to start by drinking more water and eating a good lunch (eggs or low fat cottage cheese, salad and fruit–I'm vegetarian) each day that I have no business lunch appointment.
Thanks so much.

I am going to buy myself a bikini. Starting today I am going to eat at least one piece of fruit.

I have recently (sincve Feb ’10) lost 80lbs, have gone down from a 50 waist to a 40 waist, and now want to lose the last 15 lbs to a 38 waist. I have palteaued. (I also usued some of Tom Vanuto’s ideas and suggestions) I have begun a more vigorous (but not top vigorous weight regiem). Will keep you posted, I have been eating heathier (veggies, granola, yogurt lean meats and salads), cut down on meals – plenty of water (1/2 to gal of water a day) and just need to concentrate on the diet and develop a plan that is sustainable to reach my end goal (15 more lbs)and then continue with your suggestions for a healtier lifestyle.
My commitment is to incorporate high intensity workouts into mine.
