Is This Health Food REALLY Healthy?3 Comments

You’ve probably heard me talk about how I rarely eat bread anymore.  I started off eating white bread when I was a kid growing up, and changed that to wheat bread as I got older into my 20s and 30s. Well now I don’t even eat wheat bread anymore when I learned how intolerant a lot of people are to wheat after I watched The Diet Solution Presentation by Isabel De Los Rios.

However, there is a certain type of bread that I still eat and as a matter of fact, I picked up another loaf of it a couple of days ago when I went to Whole Foods. It’s Ezekiel’s Organic Sprouted Whole Grain Bread. I recently read an article about it in OnFitness magazine and since I’ve mentioned this bread a few times in the past, I thought
I’d tell you a little more about it.

First of all, this bread comes in some different options, such as sesame and cinnamon raisin (my favorite!).  It’s not found in the typical bread aisle of the grocery store -
the Ezekiel bread is actually found in the freezer section. Here are some cool facts about the bread that make it quite different from your typical loaf of whole wheat bread:

1) It’s flourless

2) It provides complete protein – (you probably just thought of it as carbs)

3) It comes from sprouted whole grain and is organic.

This bread is far superior nutritiously than almost any other bread that you’ll find on the shelf.  One slice is 80 calories, has 4 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, no sugar and 1/2 gram of fat.  Pretty good, huh? :)

One slice is also a good source of zinc, niacin, iron and vitamin B6 as well as smaller amounts of other vitamins and minerals.  The ingredients include organic sprouted grains, soybeans, lentils and seeds.  When you put all of these ingredients together, you know what you get?  A complete protein – similar to the protein found in eggs and milk.

Surprised?  I know – I was too.

So there’s no doubt that Ezekiel bread is nutritious.  Is there a downside?  Well the only question is the taste – some people won’t like it as much as regular bread.  Ezekiel bread has more of a nutty, fibrous flavor, but here is what I do to make it taste delicious.  First, I buy the cinnamon raisin flavor.  Then, I toast it.  And finally I put natural peanut or almond butter on it.  And that, my friends, is a delicious, healthy snack.
