Lose Weight on the McDiet50 Comments
On no, here we go again!
Didn’t I just write about how unhealthy Jared and his Subway Diet was?
Well now comes a story about Chris Coleson, a man who took his waist size from 50 inches to 36 inches in 6 months eating nothing but McDonalds.
Give me a break!
You can read the full story about the McDiet.
He started at 286 pounds and went on a 1400 calorie diet – a very restrictive calorie diet for a man his size.
It gets better.
He skipped breakfast every day.
He primarily ate salads, wraps and sandwiches.
Wait, it gets even better.
He was on Good Morning America talking about it.
Apparently this is newsworthy.
He probably was doing this for the publicity anyway – a Jared wannabe.
Who knows how McDonalds is going to use this positive publicity to their advantage.
Please leave your opinion and don’t hold back.
I want to hear what everyone has to say. : )
Have a great weekend.
Scott

Good for him. Lots of people don’t eat breakfast. At least he ate wraps and salads. He is showing that even if you have to go to MCD, you can still make a good choice.
5:20 pm
I would be interested to know what his doctor has to say about this method of weight loss and also what his body stats actually are. Obviously, it is good that he has brought his weight down, but this is not a sustainable, healthy way to live and the long term ramifications are yet to be revealed. Lets see what he looks like in a year.

The response this guy got is just typical of our society in general. Everyone wants the easy way out. Not only that, but our food suppliers have been slowly poisoning us for years. Just take a look at the ingredients in our food. They KNOW sugar, fats, high fructose corn syrup, etc. are not good for us but they continue to saturate our food with it…all for the almighty dollar. You can bet the owners of those food companies aren’t eating their own food…they’re using their riches to pay their private chefs to prepare fresh, nutritious meals for them. I guess in this country, if you’re not rich, good luck with the food you get to eat!
5:25 pm
WOW! Absolutely disgusting! This is the difference between people wanting to be fit and healthy and those who just want to lose weight. He’ll gain it all back and then some because he still has very unhealthy habits (not to mention the damage he’s already done to his heart, arteries, kidneys, liver etc.). I’m absolutely furious at the media for exploiting this situation…Just one more reason for the already obese youth in this world to eat another BigMac!!
5:48 pm
It’s is a sad reality that (most)people havn’t got a clue when it comes to health. Clearly this guy made ‘better’ choices from the McD menu, but the fact is if you cut down enough calories then you will lose weight….
But! will you gain health? As has been mentioned this guy is a sitter for putting it all back on and probably even more weight than he had before, unless he makes other changes to his lifestyle and permanent healthier choices.
If people changed their lifestyle and diet with optimal health as the focus then not only would weightloss follow, but so would optimal health, then there would be no need to look for the magic ‘weightloss’ bullet (or any other magic ‘cure-all’ bullet for that matter)
Fat loss of itself does not equal health, necessarily. On the other hand good health (and habits) does equal weightloss (if we have excess and unhealthy weight, that is).
I agree it is a shame that the media perpetrate these gimmicks and fads.
5:57 pm
Unfortunately many gullible people will think this is another good way to lose weight. The truth is in order to be healthy we need to feed our bodies the nutrients it needs in reasonable amounts to remain healthy. You can’t do that eating twice a day at “Mickee Dees”. Limiting your caloric intake that drastically will produce short term results but who in their right mind would want to practice nutrient deficient and deprived lifestyle like that for the rest of their ( miserable and drastically shortened) lives?
5:58 pm
Yep I agree with you. I once weighed 220lbs and ate McDonalds too. I didn’t lose any wieght though just gained(haha) Whatever happened to a good diet and exercise! Love the blog!

You can lose weight on any food when you eat a real low calorie diet. The problem is that it is not healthy.
Subway uses conventional vegetables sprayed with pesticides, nitrite ridden meat, pasteurized cheese, and white or wheat (not whole wheat) rolls.
McDonald’s uses conventional vegetables sprayed with pesticides, hamburger from grain fed cattle, pasteurized cheese, and white rolls.
So sure you will lose weight if that is all you are eating. However, you won’t be healthy. These are two places among the thousands of others that are actually so bad for your health.
Fast food should be outlawed unless it is 100% organic, loaded with whole grains, raw cheese from grass fed cows, organic and grass fed meat without preservatives.
6:21 pm
Ok, this guy loss weight by eating McDonald’s. What I want to know, will this be his permanent diet for the rest of his life; eating Mcdonald’s. Because he can gain all that weight back plus more when he resumes back to his normal eating habits. I agree with you David that McDonald’s will take full advantage of the media exposure. The only way to lose weight in a safe and healthy way is by eating the right foods and daily exercise; breakfast is very important. Also, cut down portion sizes. But there are those individuals who thinks exercise and eating right is hard to do. So they rather undergo surgery, take pills, injections, etc.by which are very risky rather than losing weight naturally.
August of 2007 I hired a personal trainer for three months to assist me in my weight loss goals. I made this decision because at the time I was very inexperienced in utilizing the gym and knew that I will not produce any results on my own as I needed that motivation and support. I am 26 years of age, stand @ 5’7, and my weight back in August of 2007 was 215. By November of 2007 I went from 215 to 170; I am currently at that weight today. All I did was made healthier choices by which became my normal eating habits and I exercise 5 days a week doing 45 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength training. Prior my body fat was 29% and now it’s 19%. My goal is to get to 15% but I figure if I survived the holidays I do not have to worry about gaining back that fat.
6:24 pm
If you choose a low calorie diet without exercise your body goes after lean muscle tissue first because your body thinks you are starving. If you choose a low calorie diet and work out each day (I do 30-50 minutes) your body thinks the Saber Tooth Tiger is after you and goes after fat conserving muscle to run from the Tiger. The key is balance. I have done the above using low calorie Atkins and a normal level of protein and reducing carbs and fat. I have lost 50 pounds doing that twice before. Yes I know YO-YO is bad but I have “good” excuses. The above in not my theory but can be found in much of the diet literature. The key is to work out and keep the necessary protein and vitamins as part of your intake.
6:30 pm
I am so amazed that he was able to find enough nutrition there. To me it seems that the way he was losing weight is difficult and risky. Yet is it really any more difficult and risky than the way most people attempt to lose weight? I personally believe that the goal of losing weight is not a worthwhile goal. While I was focused on that goal, it caused me much disappointment and frustration. It was costing me my health and my belly was not getting much less fat. In the short time since I have replaced that goal with the goals of gaining health and eating more healthy food, my waist measurement has noticably decreased, I have much more energy and my body is recovering much more quickly from intense exercise and injuries.
6:42 pm
These sickos should try the diet I used recently – surgery. I highly recommend having one’s appendix burst, followed one week later by a colectomy because the appendix turned out to be cancerous. In a total of 9 days in the hospital I lost more than 20% of my body weight – from 148 to 116! Beat that, Oprah!
Of course it took me 3 years of hard work to get up to that previous weight, and all of the loss was muscle, none of it from my middle aged belly where I’d really like things to shrink. I have no idea how I’m gong to gain it back, so there’s another bonus for those looking for a fast weight loss program.
Even better for those who think that losing weight by neglecting nutrition might be decapitation, since they obviously aren’t using that top-most 20 lbs or so of excess fat.
6:42 pm
Calorie restriction always works. Is this how skinny people stay skinny? There’s a program called Weigh Down Workshop that’s been featured in news programs & talk shows. People eat only when they’re hungry & stop when they’re full. It doesn’t matter what they eat. People have lost dramatic amounts of weight. Does anyone know if there is proof that quality of food does matter?
6:48 pm
I think that this man is too bloody lazy to even try to do his own diet. It looks as tho he needs someone to count cook the food for him ( I wouldn’t be surprised if they hand fed him aswell, LAZY this is what he is), If so why didn’t he do Jenny Craig or someone like that. the money he spent would have went a hell of alot further if he got a presonal trainer. What is even worse is that he has premoted McDonalds, ( how much did they pay him for this )
7:34 pm
Does the quality of food matter!!??!!??
Have you ever heard of the Bionic Burger? 10 year old McDonald’s hamburgers that look like they’re brand new!
Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYyDXH1amic
8:29 pm
WOW, what’s next? Barbara Walters interviewing some person who lost weight by skipping breakfast and snorting cocaine? I can see the interview now”Hey look Barbara, I lost all this weight and so what if my nose bleeds, I can fit in my old jeans again! There’s no pressure about worrying what to eat, ’cause you don’t eat! I get lots of stuff done, and so long as I don’t get arrested, I’ll keep the weight off!”
Stories like this give people the perfect “rationalization” they need to do anything EXCEPT THE HARD WORK that it takes to live in a healthy lifestyle.
8:32 pm
Your body can take abuse like this only so many times.
8:38 pm
Okay..i am only 18 years old but i even realize this isnt healthy!!!…when i recieved scotts email thats subjest waas loose weight by eating mcdonalds i was about to erase the email and request an end to the emails..haha…good thing i read it and saw Scott felt as i do!….breakfast-as many have heard since they were little kids-is the most IMPORTANT meal of the day!…. eating the same foods every day is not healthy-we need a variety of foods and meals that are balanced!! today we are not focused on being HEALTHY-and even when we are our idea of healthy is often distorted-but instead we are focused on WeighT! Yes being poverweight is not good for your joints and your heart but just because your thin doesnt mean your healthy!!!!…Giving the MCdiet guy this publicity adds to our distorted image of being HealthY vs being ThiN FaT or SkinnY!!
8:38 pm
Yes, and you can lose weight by duct-taping your mouth or by going on a hunger strike, but you won’t be healthy. I cannot imagine the amount of sodium in the system, either. And hey, when he starts eating regularly again, what happens? The weight goes on again and then some. Yuck.
8:52 pm
That is total BS. That guy is such an idiot, way to set back the health movement another 5 years! That diet is fine and dandy if you’re looking to kill yourself in the next 20 years or so, but of course spend those last 20 years 10lbs lighter, and extremely miserable. There is no limit to the information on those salads and sandwiches, did no one watch “Supersize Me”? It’s a fact that those salads have just as much, if not more fat in them than a big mac. How is that in anyway healthy? Not to menton that that man is marketing annorexia.
It’s horid that the media is marketing thin before healthy, and this guy is only adding fuel to the fire. Who cares if you are extremely thin if you are DEAD 10-20 years before you could be! A healthy and rewarding life is all about balance – the healthy fuel your body needs and proper exercise. This guy makes me sick, and I can’t wait to hear the “surprising” news release that he’s had a heartattack or been diagnosed with diabetes. At the very least I’m sure he’s extremely vitamin deficient.
9:39 pm
Yo MAN this guy still looks like a chunky n its look as if he couldnt even sprint a metre without turning red as $#%!.
They did a test on this on a documentary show once, scientist made prisoners eat same food fo 3 months but they all got sick somehow, almost died in the end, just cause it was the same meal evry day. H then cahnged it, and they got better, obviously your meal plan layouts are effective scott.
These Whatever-Only diets are overratted bro..
9:43 pm
How does this help the youth obesity epidemic?
BS, BS, BS, and more BS.
I’d love to know this guys vitals and blood levels…
Oh yah and he also started to exercise when he started to do this “diet”. Exercises wasn’t good enough for him before???
What a bunch of crap!!!!!!!!!
ps. we know what happens when someone DIEts…
12:23 am
Has he not seen Supersize Me?? This documentary clearly showed what a pile of crap McDonald’s food really is. There is more fat in their Caesar Salad than in a Big Mac!! Exclusion diets, the way to go…yeah, right. We all know Victoria Beckham, she lives on soya beans and grapes and is very slim…but I bet her body fat is about 45%. When will people wise up and realise there is NO quick fix?? Took you years to become a huge tub of lard, will take a while to change that. If there was a pill, drink, ‘diet’ or cream that made us all lean, there would be no overweight people….I live in England and it is scary to see the American attitude to food creeping into our culture. I’m glad there are still people in the USA (getting more each day) that have wised up to the fact that healthy food and exercise are the way to go.Keep spreading the word you guys!!
3:27 am
McDonald’s is disgusting. It’s not even real food. More than likely he’ll go back to eating 5 big macs a day and gain it back, plus some. And he was on Good Morning America. It’s partly the media’s fault because if you want the truth on how to be healthy and fit you have to find it for yourself. The media won’t report on someone that lost weight the right way because it takes work, and that’s pretty sad.
5:14 am
hello scott-i’m with you on this man. proper diet and exercise. thats your only key to proper weight lose…peace
5:46 am
What to make of this…obviously this is not the way to make healthy and sustainable changes. Has he really changed anything except that he eats less? The article says he also started exercising, something they gloss over pretty quickly. He was pretty darn heavy before he started – he actually still appears overweight. The article says he chose a diet that made sense for him — does no one in his house cook? It’s pretty simple to make an egg or even buy a rotisserie chicken and cans of tuna! His wife even jumped on the McDiet. I just don’t know what to make of it. But promoting any fast food as “healthy” is a dangerous way to go.
7:01 am
This amounts to more diet and fitness “noise” promoted by the mass media. Since people are looking for the “easy way out,” they will believe this is a viable fat loss strategy.
We fitness professionals need to use this to highlight our simple common sense message…
Eat whole natural foods in moderation and get more active.
7:05 am
I’m in cellular and traditional nutrition (bachelor) and I really do believe that some people are just too lazy to eat properly at home. They always take the easiest and shortest way, even for eating. In fact these men can eat in a way much proper way at Mc Do then is doing at home.
For the rest of my tough about that… well, the movie Super size me reveal a lot about Mc Do complete menu. If you stay away from soft drinks and fries, you’ll remove tow strikes against you.
With the salad, don’t push to hard on the dressing and with rap sandwich; pick the salsa as a healthier dressing then every other suggested creamy sauce. And always keep in mind that you need good carbs to maintain your muscular tonus…
You have to watch the bio availability of your supplements if you take some
Don’t be lazy, train smart and you’ll reach your goals
8:44 am
It’s a bunch of BUNK!! Just because they lost the weight, doesn’t mean its the right way.Sick people lose weight, does that mean they’re healthy? No!! Just a bunch of BUNK!!
8:46 am
I have to applaud Mr. Coleson for losing the weight. His eating approach doesn’t sound like the ideal way to lose weight. But that was his choice to do things the way that he did. And I must applaud Mr.
Coleson for exercising. Anyone should be able to lose weight who exercise on a 1400 daily calorie diet. Consistently that is. I don’t think I’d go under 1800 daily calories with increased physical activity if I needed to lose weight that badly.
I do agree that weight can be lost with healthier food choices. Again, it all boils down to personal choices.
10:22 am
I think it’s rediculous that people do this kind of crap to lose way when there’s so many other simpletechniques they could be applying to their lives It really makes me sick. And on top of that you hear people complain about not losing any weight when they’re doing absolutely nothing to change it. I don’t know what this world has turned in to..but I can say that Americans seem to be getting lazier and lazier as the days go by..
10:59 am
This is the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard. Why is the media so quick to let people hear and believe things like this. Anyone stupid enough to think they can lose weight by skipping breakfast and eating McDonald’s every day is asking for trouble. Seriously are we that naive? Doesn’t anyone value being healthy as a thing to advertise. Sure the guy is smaller, but he got that way eating more junk in smaller quantities. What next?
11:29 am
What was he thinking, I can get thin off fast food that is nuked, fried, and PREPROCESSED. I guess he should be congratulated for an effort to refrain on calories but what he was putting in was low nutrient staple, there is a needed balance of fat(good), protein, and fiber to cause the body to work efficiently and somehow he has fooled his body with most of the lesser, he was probably this big from just lack of exercise and huge calorie intake.
11:32 am
I believe what they say is true “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. I am a single person and find it really hard to cook a meal for 1, so sometimes a restraunt drive thru sounds more appealing after a long day at work. I think if your going to make these choices of fast food you should choose the healthy menu. I think its great that fast food joints are serving a healthy choice menu these days. I think it’s important that they show the food fact labels on everything, so people know what thier serving sizes are.
10:06 pm
That is just retarded yeah lets encourage fat people to eat even more unhealthy nutrient deficient FAT food to make them think they can lose even more weight. It is just a marketing scam like Chris Shugart says Shit is still shit!
3:33 am
Man people must hate Macdonalds I know I do. Well I am or was a sucker for anything fast especially the macdonalds Fries… Yum.
No I say YUK…
macdonalds must put stuff in the food to make you want more. Check out what a macdonalds diet did to me.
9:42 am
I wonder how much MSG, sodium, high fructose sugar, hydrogenated fat is in McDonald’s? While I commend his efforts to lose weight, the way he did it is not the healthiest path. Skipping breakfast is the worst thing a person can do. And, exercise did not seem to play too big a role which is crucial to successful weight loss and maintenance!
10:47 am
I just have one question…is this his Life style change?? with years of being a yo-yo dieter i know one thing now…the way you lose the weight is the way you gotta keep it off. you cant lose weight and then come back to “normal” and expect it to be off.
well at least he made healthy choices and it worked for him…but it sure is not healthy!!
12:37 pm
What was so wrong with his diet? So many people on these days are just “too healthy” with their organic fruits and veggies and 7 grain breads and counting out their grams of fat and carbs and protein. Your average person cannot afford to eat way. I think for him he made an intelligent choice. He went to a restaurant he liked and picked the smarter options of what to eat from the menu. Although,at his weight, he probably could have done the old fashioned ice cream diet and lost weight.
FYI, in the article I read, McDonald’s said they already have the spokesperson-he’s a clown
3:53 pm
He lost weight but personally I would never recommend anyone do this. I would never recommend anyone skip breakfast, deprive themselves of calories or eat Mac Donalds ever to lose weight. 98% of fast food is loaded with hidden sugars and fats not to mention high fructose corn syrup. Without the proper lifesyle change and proper habits he is setting himself up for failure if he wants to keep the weight off long term. Again he lost weight but is he going to be healthier eating this food? I surely doubt it.
Oh before I go.. why is this national news? People lose weight everyday working their butt off..and working hard and eating the right foods. Leave it to the media to glorify them for losing weight eating fast food….the guy is on Good Morning America for eating Mac Dondalds crap food. I think this just inspired my next blog.
4:18 pm
Great!! Here comes yet another “fly-by-nite” way to lose weight! I agree with many of the previous comments about how unhealthy his way was. So, I guess he didn’t even think about the other changes he made in his lifestyle, like maybe walking to McDonald’s or riding a bike… And, what was he thinking? Skipping breakfast? the meal that jumpstarts your metabolism for fat burning??? Aahh, the quickness of the American way…it’s really not all it’s cracked up to be.
7:42 pm
It is great that the guy has been able to change the way he looks at food and has made better choices (no matter that they are from McD’s) but I really hate how the media jumps on stories like this.
I think that most people that try to emulate this man will fall prey to the slick marketing and draw to the other 90% of the menu that will never take you toward your goal leaving them hopeless once again.
But, Bravo for losing your weight Sir. Keep it up.
8:15 pm
WOW. Good for him, but at what expense! Heck, he could have had a McMuffin for breakfast (egg, ham, cheese for protein, and muffin as a carb to jumpstart his day)!! He still needs snacks to keep his metabolism going. You can easily get yogurt and cottage cheese at the grocery store. Hell a bag of salad, and a pack of chicken for the week cost less than one from McDonalds (for those of you bringing up the $$ issue)! Yes it is quick and easy, but where I live, they will bring your groceries to your door for a couple bucks, yeah, take that for lazy people. Everyone has excuses, and I do too, but I am trying. Nothing in life is easy, except for being lazy!!!
9:36 pm
People know how to use businesses that are making money to publizice themselves. Whether it is healthy or not is entirely up to the person. It is himself only that has to live with the low energy, low vitality and who are we to say what would work best for him!Maybe he felt it was his only option as we do not know the full details in leading up to his decision! He could use our understanding and sympathy. We could give him lots of advice but that would only be based on what would work for us and maybe for him it would not work. For some people exercise actually reduces their energy instead of increasing it just because of the type of people they are. He made this decision for a reason-whether we feel it is healthy or not is just based on what works for us and what we would do or not do. Thanks Helen Cowan
1:38 am
Everybody seems to jump on what seems easy these days, people loves stories and methods for fat loss that tickles in the ears!!! They want everything for free. We are here to tell the truth about health, training, fat burning and muscle building. Either way. He who has ears, let him hear the truth. And he who don’t want to listen will not ever listen! But no one can say that we did not warn them all.
Remember that the truth is simple and good! Follow the truth and expect success!
We are in 2008 after Jesus Christ
Its in fact 2008 all over the world after Jesus. And he says “beleive in me, and welcome me, and i will give you eternal life in return” I am the truth!!
The difference is that we are here to tell the truth!! And after all, he who has the truth himself, is the only one to tell it to others!!
3:39 am
Take a look at the guy’s ‘before’ picture. I would like to see what happens when a individual that is not a ‘whale’ tries the diet. A normal healthy life style would have served the same purpose and would have been much better for the guy’s overall health.
Please people – GET REAL!
6:35 am
Clearly if you have a defecit of calories, over a period of six months, you will lose weight. Why choose a diet that is probably high in additives and trans-fats and low on fresh fruit, vegetables, fibre, minerals and vitamins. I am surprised that he felt able to stay on this diet as the GI and GL are probably high. It also seems an expensive way to eat inferior meals but at least he has reduced his obesity.
6:46 am
What this points out unfortunately is success through convenience. To make a commitment to a healthly lifestyle take disciplin. It is not so easy to plan out your meals, shop for the ingredients and prepare them. This is a toucgh thing for most people to do. This gentleman got by that by going to a fastfood restaurant everyday. In my opinion a bad choice but it did work for him because there were no barriers to doing it.
Wouldn’t be great if we had the equivalent to fast food that was a truly healthy at drive through convenience. We have a society that is badly over weight and we are hammered by that very fact. I don’t see anything being done about it.
I have the discilpin to work out but the diet part is always a struggle for me. I keep working at it but it is never easy. A few years ago a successful train started a series of restaurants geared toward helthly choices and they failed. I guess health just doesn’t sell to the masees.
11:04 am
I don’t believe in diets program, I believe you have to change the way you think about food and your life style. Your life style should have a workout program…eating the right food with your workout is the best way and the healthy way to lose weight. I ‘m a vegan and the way I live is so differ from the norm. So, Mc diet and subway diet doesn’t work for me.
3:07 pm
Wow! A lot of responses on that one…
My opinion: this is a farce!
