Should You Be Giving Out Chocolate For Halloween?17 Comments
Halloween week continues on the blog.
What are you giving out for Halloween?
Do you believe that you should be giving out chocolate to the neighborhood kids and make it a fun time for them?
Or do you like to give something healthier? Maybe apples or other fruits?
How about some mixed nuts or popcorn?
You’ll never guess what my parents used to give out when I was little?
Just watch the video and you’ll find out.
Plus take a sneak peek at what I’m giving out this year.
Don’t forget to share your comments and ideas right here on the blog.
What are you giving to the kids on Halloween?
Have an amazing day.

Hey Scott!
I am going with the fruit leathers ( Fruit 2 go ) as well as new Rice crisp bars made of brown rice and agave nectar called Salba Crisp bars. I have MINI juice boxes and the worst of the healthy items is Sesame Snaps made with Sesame seed and honey…still TONS better than milk chocolate!!!
Happy HEALTHY Halloween everyone!!!

I think I’ve decided on the chocolate like you. I would love to do trail mix, but I can’t find single serve bags. I’m still mulling over temporary tattoos – but I do think it’s a day for treats. Too bad treats are so common these days.
I love how Nomar looked like he could hear the creaking door at the end!

Hey Scott,
The kids and I don’t celebrate halloween and I am keeping them home from school because their class is having parties. We are sugar sensitive and I don’t want them getting filled with junk.
We live in a rural area and have never had anyone come to our door. Any neighbour kids just go in town.
On occasion I give my kids fruit leathers as treats. They still have natural sugars but at least they come from fruit. So a good alternative to candy are fruit leathers.

I wanted to give small boxes of raisins, but my husband says that kids would be disappointed, so we’re giving candy. Since it needs to be individually wrapped, we are giving dark chocolate squares from Costco, like the ones that Scott showed in the video. Nomar is a great cat!

Hey Scott,
We are giving out playdough…saw it in toyRus and thought hmmm…my kids would love that. It should be a hit for the little kids that live in the neighborhood (ages 3-8).
The kids will get TONS of candy I’m sure! Plus I have Boot-Camp signs on my jeep so I dont wanna look like a hypocrit…lol!

I’ve decided to stick with the traditional chocolate candy bars, but I might have to change my mind… After buying a couple of bags I glanced over at the nutritional information and noticed not just the amount of carbs (that’s understandable since it’s all sugar), but the fat in some of these is RIDICULOUS! What used to be one of my favorites when I was a kid was the Nestle Crunch bar. The mini bars have 10g of fat of which all 10g is saturated fat! And that’s per two of the mini bars!!!
Wow… I’m re-thinking the candy part, and you can bet you won’t see me touching this stuff.

Oh, and I heard an interesting fact on the History Channel two days ago (haven’t researched it): Apparently an average adult in the US consumes 3 (or 4, I can’t remember) POUNDS of candy during the Halloween season!

There was a house on my street that gave out punch from a dry ice cauldron! I thought that was really cool. My favorite was getting an actual pack of gum! I’ve seen little bags of pretzles too, but i sort of like the fruit leather idea.

Ha! I bought 86% cocoa chocolates (Cote d’or) which have even less sugar. I will also got some no sugar whole wheat bars!
9:08 pm
We bought a bag of Costco mixed candy, but I may end up just like in Grumpy Old Men… giving out a can opener, a can of tuna…

Wow, nickles and dimes is interesting. Nowdays, if you did give out say…a quarter per kid you’d probably get a lot of repeat “customers” and that could really add up, so maybe I will just stick to treats. My kids got some mini playdoughs last year and loved it! I think that is a fun idea.

Scott,
The dark chocolate is a good idea. I love dark chocolate myself and really prefer to give kids something healthy. I do it for my own kids why not other parents’ kids too. Show through good example and there is hope for the future!

In the old days , we would make popcorn balls and such, but I know if Abby or Charlotte came home with one in their bag, it would probably go in the garbage. Scary how overcautious evil people have made us. Sugar free bubble gum is our way to go now.

Hey Scott,
I hitting your house on Halloween this year and get some of those great treats! LOL! Actually, I live on a street that doesn’t get any trick or treaters. But your video on giving out nutritious treats was good. In fact, I thought your idea of videos themed around Halloween week was pure genius. I’ve enjoyed and benefited from your creativity.
Thanks,
Gerald

Hey Scott,
This year we actually gave out an amazing “Healthy” Chcoclate with no wax, fillers, or crap in it and it is low glycemic.
There are a few different types of bars, or squares. This stuff is so good for you that it is recommended to be eaten 3 times a day for better health and it tastes amazing. After eating this chocolate all others taste like wax! If you want more info go to http://www.HealthyChocolateLover.net
PS People have been losing weight as well eating it because it curbs cravings.
PSS 3 power squares are not even 100 calories!

I know it’s a little late, but an idea for next year.
What we did was buy glow bracelets at Micheals Craft Store in California, $1 for 15 bracelets. It was a huge hit with the kids, and the parents appreciated that it was something that also helped with the safety being out in the dark, not to mention that it was one less sugar treat! I have kids, so they’ll have fun with the left overs, and I don’t need to worry about my sugar cravings!
I must have done something right with my kids. They ate a small amount of the candy they got and asked if they could take it to school to sell to their friends. I checked with their teachers and they had no problem with it, so my kids have been very enterprising this year and have made enough money off of selling their Halloween candy to treat themselves to seeing a movie out in the theaters!
