Your 30 Day Challenge
June 30th, 2008 · Filed Under: Abs Nutrition
Have you ever watched the show 30 Days?
It was created by Morgan Spurlock who made the movie Super Size Me.
Remember that one? Morgan ate McDonalds 3 times a day for 30 straight days.
Well in his show 30 Days, Morgan puts someone in an environment (sometimes himself) that they are not used to for 30 straight days.
One time Morgan and his girlfriend lived on minimum wage for 30 days.
Anyhow, I want you to challenge yourself for the NEXT 30 DAYS starting on July 1.
What’s my 30 Day Challenge?
I’m going to be eating only single ingredient foods for the next 30 days and will post regular updates on the blog.
Check out the video below so you can get a better idea of what I’m doing and how I will succeed on this.
Then I want you to pick YOUR own 30 Day Challenge and post a comment on the blog about what you plan to do.
Perhaps you will do the same thing I am doing?
Maybe you will give up all sweets or alcohol for the next 30 days.
Or perhaps you will follow the Bikini Abs Makeover system step by step for the next 30 days.
Pick something that will challenge you. Get a little out of your comfort zone.
YOU decide.
YOU’RE in control.
When you decide on your challenge, please leave a comment and tell us what you plan to do for the next 30 Days!
Have an amazing day.
Scott

Scott,
I have a feeling I’m addicted to both of these, so for the next 30 days, I challenge myself to go without coffee, diet soda, or any other beverage like that. I’ll drink only filtered water, 1 cup of non-fat milk in the morning, and some Gatorade as needed to replenish electrolytes after playing outside with my kids.
June 30th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
can’t wait to try this challenge. gonna eat high protein single food ingredient foods. will keep you posted.
June 30th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
hi, will be interested to follow your progress. Are you going to give up chewing gum? (Might be a good idea to give it up while making videos
)
June 30th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Hi Scott,
I always look forward to your emails arriving, but so far I have not managed to get my butt into motion to achieve my goals.
This is a great opportunity to start so I am going to follow your example with the single ingredient idea… which will help me conquer my worse habit, which is SUGAR!!
I’m also going to try to exercise at least a small amount each and every day in July.
I know you will succeed and be a role model for us all as always.
Wish me luck!

Great challenge Scott!
I regularly go 7 to 8 days with only single ingredient foods, but have never gone a full 30 days.
It’s actually pretty easy to eat only single ingredient foods and it actually makes grocery shopping a whole lot easier. I’m in and out of there in 15 minutes.
I love oatmeal, fruit, sweet potatoes, fish, tuna, chicken, veggies, almonds, walnuts, and seeds. They are all satisfying and tasty.
The move to single ingredient foods alone is the best way to discard fat. Forget all the advanced techniques. Master this fundamental and you are golden.
Keep up the great work buddy!
And ya… get rid of that chewing gum

I agree with Jurgen on the gum chewing. You should really give up chewing with your mouth open for the rest of your life, it is gross.
June 30th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
I gave up sugar totally (including pastas and high carb foods) for June and I was amazed at my body at the end of the month. I was even able to have a glass of wine with dinner every evening. I had a party to go to, and I splurged on sugar this weekend. I am going to give it all up again for July plus high fat cheeses, egg yolks and dairy. I work out 5 days out of seven. Let’s see what will happen!! I agree with Jurgen–give up the chomping on gum while making videos!!!! Ruins your credibility. Good luck with your challenge. PS - I’m 53 and people think I am 37.

I am with you Scott! I ‘ll try the single ingredient diet tomorrow. I can not wait to see the results
Thanks for all of your help!

Yup… was going to comment on the gum Scott, but I see I have been beat… anyway, good challenge and I wish you luck. I just finished my personal challenge of doing 30 min high intensity interval cardio every day for a week… maybe now I will go for a full 3o days. Great inspiration, thanks.

Hi Scott,
Just for clarity, when eating those single ingredient foods, are seasonings and such allowed? May I put cinnamon and sugar (or Splenda) in my oatmeal? May I season proteins before cooking them? The more I think about what I am asking, I am thinking yes, provided the things I add are also single ingredient. Right?
June 30th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Single ingredient foods sounds like a great challenge for July. My brother has recently gone totally vegan and he has SO much more energy! Maybe I’ll also try to amp up the veg/fruit choices for the month.
And Scott, NO GUM ON VIDEO!

Nice post. I’ll be starting my “30 day challenge” soon. Just came off of an abdominal hernia surgery, so I can’t do really anything in the way of workouts there yet…I can walk and basic movement stuff like that, but it has given me that big wake-up call to get my stomach into kick-ass shape (one cause of hernia/muscle weakness is obesity, which I do have there…heh). So, once I get the clearance, my 30 day challenge there shall begin.

Hello,
Just viewed your message for the thirty day challenge. I would like to be a part of it. My challenge is water and sugar and exercise. I would like to challenge myself to thirty days of drinking water the eight glasses a day (1). I do not drink water hardly ever. The second is sugar, I really like candy, sugar in my tea and coffee, cookies you know the usual stuff. Finally, I would like to use my treadmill for thirty minutes a day for thirty days. For me all the above is hard. So I am going to do my very best starting July first. I am over weight, my worst areas are my stomach, arms and breast. I want to improve so bad I just don’t know how to get started and keep at it. I so much am not pleased with how I look. Sincerely, Barbara
June 30th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Well, at least he wasn’t chewing tobacco!
For the next 30 days I will be doing the Anabolic Diet
Good Luck to Scott & Others!
June 30th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Get out of your comfort zone for 30 days eh? I can do that.. I’m gonna move my cardio to the morning.. Minimum 15 min skipping.. Gotta understand, I’m not a morning person at all so yea, this is a challenge.. But I’ll get’er done! Check back in 30!!
June 30th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
I love the single ingredient idea. However, I am going to go vegan for 30 days. I experimented with this before and I found that it was easier to stay on track being vegan rather than vegetarian (too many concessions for me). Good luck everyone!
June 30th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Don’t listen to the. I was paying attention to what you were saying, not chewing. You are very motivating. I don’t feel prepared to start any challange tomorrow, but I will plan for next week.
June 30th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Thanks for the inspiration. My goal is to go without alcohol, coffee and diet soft drinks for the next 30 days. I already tend to eat mostly single ingredient foods, but I will be more vigilant in this regard especially when dining out.
Love your pussycats, please include their antics in future blogs.
June 30th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Hey all…it is great to see everyone on here writing in their challenges. You all have come up with some great ones.
I really apologize about the gum. I rarely chew it but a friend gave me a piece after lunch and I forgot I had it in my mouth. I didn’t realize I was chewing it still when I made the video.
I apologize.
Cass, I would say yes to seasoning the your foods, but no to the sugar and Splenda or other artificial sweeteners.
However, this is YOUR challenge so you can make up your own rules. : )
Can’t wait to see what others come up with. I will post updates on mine and would love to hear other people chime in during the 30 days on their progress.
Thanks everyone!

I will be more than happy to join the 30 day challenge with the Single Ingredient but I will be needing some suggestions. Please and Thank You.
June 30th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
LOVE how “real” you are Scott. Fabulous idea re: single ingredient foods for 30-days. Hubby & I just complete a challenge contract from Feb.-1st July to ban any form of chocolate, ice-cream, cakes, soft drinks etc. from our eating to establish conscious eating habits. We already keep a fabulous menu plan but wanted to challenge ourselves through Easter, birthdays, weddings etc. Outcome= success & even better skin, energy & attitude. The accountability to each other has kept it solid & plus brings out your competitive nature. We’ll be thinking of you this month- GO SCOTT

Hey, just a note to the one asking about seasonings, etc
For your oatmeal how about cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin and to sweeten it use organic agave nectar. It’s a natural product, one ingredient and sweeter than sugar so you don’t need much. It’s also slow digesting which is a good thing. Or add fruit and nuts.
As for yogurt you could eat a plain greek yogurt called Fage or Oikos….they have organic nonfat milk with live cultures ( I think that’s close enough to one ingred). High in protein…low sugars, carbs. The best out there. Add fruit, cinnamon, nuts… yumm.
Season away with garlic, fresh basil, cilantro, lemon, zest, oregano and the list goes on………
Now that I think of it most of what I eat on a daily basis is one ingredient. There are a few things that are not so doing that wouldn’t be too hard for me I guess. I eat lots of eggs, oatmeal , veggies galore, fruit, nuts, chicken, fish, sirloin, bison, sweet pot. My downfalls are ezekiel bread (several sprouted ingred), however a very healthy choice, and there is a tortilla that I am very fond of.
Hey for those choosing the one ingred don’t forget natural butters. You can find some that have nothing but the nut, no added salt. Also don’t forget beans. Use either dry beans or there is a brand (organic) called garden of eden…their beans are just that, no added salt or anything. Convenient. Oh and then there is edaname (good protein source).
OK, just thought I’d throw some suggestions out there. I’m on a month long vacation at our place in Maine so I choose not to take the challange right now. Last summer at this time I took a challange which totally interrupted my time with my family here and they would kill me if I did something like that this year. Last summer I prepared for my first fitness competition and the age of 46. It took a lot out of me, a lot of committment but and willpower. So this year I really need to chill a bit. I do and have already , plan to hit the exercise hard though. I will keep with my clean eating as much as possible with that occaisionaly summer ice cream treat.
Good luck to you all………..

I’m cutting out all caffeinated drinks and the occasional late night binge eating. When I head off for college I’m going to give the single ingredient challenge a try, I don’t plan on eating at the cafeteria that much b/c my college has a meal plan for off campus eating at certain places.
June 30th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
I’m eliminating ALL sugar from my diet and would also try the single ingredient food also. I’m looking forward to seeing the results.
June 30th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Hi Scott,
I am going to really focus on getting in my water every day and staying off of diet coke. I’ve been off of it for a couple weeks now and want to make a permanent situation. Also, I’ve been slacking in the excercise department this week, so it would be good to do at least 2 four-minute workouts every day (I was doing that for a couple weeks and felt great). I also want to focus more on fruits and vegetables, and possibly phase out animal products all together…I think that one will have to be gradual.
July 1st, 2008 at 1:10 am
I’ve been neglecting my body for several months due to work, so my 30-day challenge will be to do some form of exercise for 30mins every day & late night snacks. I may even give the single ingredient challenge a try. Good luck to everybody.
July 1st, 2008 at 1:11 am
Meant to say give up late night snacks
July 1st, 2008 at 3:06 am
Hi Scott!
One simple question: with this challenge you mean go whole days on one ingredient alone? Or just whole foods while combining them? Example: chicken breast with broccoli - ´Cause I´ve done whole days of one food only, the results are good but you need to educate your body first…
I´m getting interested in participating. Thank´s
July 1st, 2008 at 4:08 am
I’m in! 30 days of single ingredient foods and 30 days of some form of exercise. What a great health plan! I find single ingredient foods make healthy eating(and shopping) so much easier.
July 1st, 2008 at 4:33 am
I am in too, I will give up soda, sweets, and fastfood for the next 30 days.
July 1st, 2008 at 6:02 am
I will be happy to join the 30 day challenge with the Single Ingredient.
July 1st, 2008 at 6:46 am
I’m going to do cardio in the morning every day for the month of July. I am also going to stop all negative internal comments to myself! Nothing but positive, successful thoughts and early morning workouts! I’ll be checking back frequently when I feel my commitment lagging.
Thanks!
July 1st, 2008 at 7:59 am
hey Scott,
i dont know about everyone else, but i hav trouble motivating myself to get into a fitness routine and this 30 day challenge, do u have any ideas on how to motivate yourself? also, i like the 8 minute work out video that you posted a while ago, and i was wandering how often would you do it? like twice a day? or twice every other day? hope to hear from you soon
July 1st, 2008 at 8:00 am
I actually started doing a single ingredient eating plan last week - I just didn’t know that was what it was called! So I am taking up the challenge of keeping it going through July and, hopefully, beyond. Thanks for the motivation and encouragement.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:15 am
Thanks for the motivation. I just dropped out of a YMCA Boot Camp, couldn’t hack it, vowed to get in better shape so I could catch the next session. I will do the single ingredient challenge for the next month, hopefully I will lose some weight from my core.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:50 am
Wow! what motivation i get from reading all of these. I’m in! I can’t start today, but will start tomorrow. Cheese is my downfall………will work at giving it up as well as diet sodas, and eat as many single ingredient foods as possible. No bread, pasta, tortillas, etc. And i like the reader who said she would banish negative comments about herself. I’m gonna take some pics today so i can compare at the end of the month.
July 1st, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Okay so after reading resterday’s email and listening to the blog and all that I decided that I definately wanted to take part in the 30-day challenge, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. As I was running this morning, it occurred to me what I wanted my challenge to be. My challenge is going to be to exercise every single day for the next 30 days. Even if this just means going for a 30 minute walk to let my muscles re-coop, or playing a game of bball, I am going to do it. I tend to get off track and not exercise for a week or so sometimes so I think this challenge will be perfect for me. I am well on my way to reaching my goal and this will just help me reach it even faster. Good luck everyone on your challenges and here’s to sticking with mine!
July 1st, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Great work! & good ideas. Yes. First thing I noticed was the gum. Lose it for the video posts
July 1st, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Scott,
Great idea on the one ingredient foods and my husband and I are on the team! Day one has been pretty easy so far and planning is the key. July 1st, 2008 at 8:19 pm
I really love the idea of a 30 day challeneg! I am going for high intensity work out for 30-45 min each day for 30 days. Wish me luck,I will also work on reducing my sugar intake not sure if I can do it for 30 days but will try. Good luck to everyone!!
July 1st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Thanks for your persistence in wanting me to get in on the 30 day challenge and now I know what I want to do for the next 30 days-to keep my body balanced each day by balancing my physical/mental/emotional/spiritual aspects of my life through diet/exercise/affirmations/practicing energy medicine and then I am a beautiful person not only on the outside but on the inside as well-I look forward to this challenge with great enthusiasm and interest..Helen Cowan

Hi from cold South Africa, even though the day are warm the evenings are some what chilly.I saw your 30 day challange and have decided to join in .I have been loosing weight far too slowly for my likeing and would like to shock the system as of tomorrow I will only be eating single ingredient food and will send the results in 4 weeks time. thanks for the challenge and will see you at the end with some hopefully good results. Cheers from South Africa
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:23 am
hi there,
the challenge sounds interesting, and i would be following the same strategy of eating a single ingredient food, the food would include fruits like papaya, pamegranate and pears, veggies like
spinach , cucumber & pumpkin and probably walnuts as i m a pure vegeterian. lets see how it works. i hope to acieve good results. good luck to you scott and everyone else taking up the challenge.
